April 5, 1999 NY Times article about MP3

Thanks to progress in "coding" and networking, it is now possible to hear quality audio over the Internet.

If you have a telephone modem connection, then you can either listen to lower fidelity Real Audio versions as they "stream" across the Internet ("."), or download high quality MP3 files ("Get MP3") to listen to after the downloads complete. If you have a cable modem or other fast connection, either Real Audio or MP3 should provide high quality without downloading the song file. In either case, you'll need a "player" application on your computer. The links below lead to free player software for both "." and "Get MP3."
