ART'S SAKE

Some people do it for money
Some people do it for love
Some people do it for a little while
But that ain't alway smart
Some people do it for pleasure
When they got it in their heart
Some people do it just to be in style
But me I do it for art

The life of a musician has its ups and downs
And sometimes it's the greatest
But playing in bars, after night after night
Just don't seem to make it
There are those that are better and those that are worse
Like any other occupation
But they're standing in line just to snowball to hell
To be heard on a radio station

Some people do it ...

He thought that he'd be a painter
And he worked at it for years
But there's more to that than a special hat
And the money's not always there
His whole life was wrapped in aesthetics
His every thought was loaded with 'em
Line and form and repetition
His fingernails were grimy with 'em

Some people do it ...

I knew this gal who was a dancer
Of serious ballet
And everywhere she went she thought of
Nought but pas de bouree
If the outside world did touch her
It was anybody's guess
She'd be walking straight and tall due south
With her feet a pointing east and west

Some people do it ...

I always hoped to be a poet
And to write real good and mean
I wanted to describe all the things I felt
Though they weren't always clean
The beauty of a flower
Don't always smell like a rose
When the imitation of life as art itself
Turns on you, holding its nose

Some people do it ...
